Qualifications:
- Candidates must have a Ph.D., M.D., or M.D./Ph.D. degree. Preference given to candidates receiving degree within 12 months of potential start date.
- Strong knowledge of molecular biology, biochemistry, and/or genetics is preferred. Knowledge in yeast genetics will be considered a strong asset. Expertise in other areas such as computational biology or biophysics may also be suitable.
- Preference given to candidates with papers published or close to submission for publication at time of application. Other evidence of drive for scientific excellence and productivity will also be considered.
- Candidates with external funding will receive salary bonuses.

Project description:
Repetitive DNA sequences at the ends of linear chromosomes, namely telomeres, ensure that the ends of chromosomes are not recognized as double stranded DNA break by the cell [Papers on the topic from Mekhail lab: Chan J.N. et al. Developmental Cell 20:867-879 (2011); Mekhail, K. et al. Nature Rev. Mol. Cell Biol. 11:317-328 (2010); Mekhail et al. Nature 456:667-670 (2008)]. However, DNA damage near chromosome ends does occur and this is linked to several age-related diseases such as cancer. Data in the Mekhail lab point to a novel DNA repair pathway as critical to the repair of DNA double stranded breaks at telomeres but not non-telomeric loci. As a member of the Mekhail lab, the successful postdoctoral fellow will investigate these novel DNA repair processes. The conserved pathway will be investigated primarily in budding yeast before transitioning into mammalian systems.
