We search for a postdoctoral fellow in bioinformatics that together with the steering group of the Center for Infectious Diseases at the Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell biology, will work on projects in bioinformatics and infection biology.

The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies infectious diseases as one of the greatest global health threats. Major killers among infectious diseases are lower respiratory tract infections (mainly pneumonia), diarrheal diseases,HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. Bacteria such as pneumococci, mycobacteria and helicobacter, parasites for example malaria parasites, and viruses such asHIVare studied within the center. The research includes studies on epidemic spread, antibiotic resistance development, pathogenicity, as well as drug and vaccine research. Novel technology platforms at the SciLife Laboratory open new avenues for infection biology research and make it possible to perform high-through-put sequencing for genomic studies of microorganisms and the human flora as well as expression analysis of microbes. Bioinformatic analyses are of utter most importance in these studies.

This position includes bioinformatics analysis of sequence data coming from different well characterized microorganisms to study evolution, pathogencity, immune evasion and spread. Furthermore, biological data will be correlated to genomic content and expression studies will be performed in different biological settings. Metagenomic studies on the human flora will also be done as well as immune-response analysis directed against molecularly target structures. These studies will be done in collaboration with the bioinformatic expertise at the SciLife Laboratory.

Qualifications

To qualify, the applicant must hold a doctor’s degree or a foreign qualification deemed equivalent to a doctorate. Preferably in bioinformatics or in infection biology with a qualification also in bioinformatics/computer science. Applicants who have completed their degree no more than three years before the last date for applications should be given priority. Candidates who have completed their degree earlier than this should receive equal priority if special grounds exist.

Postgraduates who have yet to graduate may apply if their public defense is scheduled to take place within three months after the application deadline, in which case verification from the Dissertation Committee or equivalent body must be submitted with the application.

The employment as a postdoctoral fellow will be fixed to two years with a potential possibility for prolongation for two more years.

Assessment grounds

A PhD in bioinformatics and/or in infection biology. Preferably the applicant has qualifications in both bioinformatics and infection biology. Experience with international collaborations, project management and supervision of students is an advantage, but not required.
