英国生物技术与生物科学研究委员会博士后招聘
job description
Postdoctoral Scientist, Avian Viral Immunology Group
The Institute for Animal Health (IAH) is one of five research institutes of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and is at the forefront of research into animal diseases.
It is based on two sites: Compton (near Newbury) and Pirbright (near Woking). In total, the Institute employs some 400 staff and, at any one time, is host to up to 50 students and visiting scientists.
PURPOSE
Research atIAHis administered through 3 main programmes. Avian Viral Diseases (AVD) programme focuses on infectious viral diseases challenging poultry health. The programme aims at improving poultry health by carrying out excellent scientific research towards better understanding of avian viral diseases, and their host species, that will lead to the development of better control methods through improved vaccines or disease resistance. TheAVDprogramme, currently based at Compton, will transfer to the new facilities at Pirbright by around 2015, where the state-of-the-art laboratory and animal experimentation facilities along with a number of inbred specific-pathogen-free lines of chickens of distinct genetic susceptibility to viral diseases will be available for research.
Avian Influenza is a serious threat to the poultry industry and, as the potential source of a human pandemic virus, to public health. Measures to control infection in domesticated poultry have included vaccination, either with killed virus in adjuvant or with recombinant vaccine virus. Of the latter type, Fowlpox recombinants have been most extensively used but in common with other vaccines have appeared to drive antigenic variation in circulating influenza virus. The aim of this project is to develop more sustainable vaccines that further reduce or eliminate the shedding of virus from infected vaccinated animals.
JOBDESCRIPTION
The position is supported by aBBSRCgrant to study the correlation of immunogenicity with microarray analysis of vector mutants to improve live recombinant poxvirus vaccines in poultry. This work should directly lead to a high throughput mechanism for screening potential vaccine vector candidates and a reduction in the need for in vivo experimentation. Drawing on the historic strengths of theIAHas well as support from collaborating organisations, this position forms part of a programme of work that is being established to develop detailed understanding of transmission between individuals, pathogenesis within individuals, protective immunity and genetic resistance. This programme should contribute directly to the development of improved and sustainable vaccines as well as poultry that are genetically more resistant to infection and responsive to vaccination.
DUTIESANDRESPONSIBILITIES
The post holder will be required to coordinate and conduct their research in a collaborative manner within an active research team and will be expected to contribute to other activities of the Avian Viral Immunology Group. The nature of this work will require the use of high-level biocontainment facilities under QA procedures with rigorous attention to detail. The post holder will be expected to report on their science internally, through reports and presentations; to the collaborative team at regular progress meetings; to present their results at scientific meetings and also in peer-reviewed publications. They will also be expected to initiate and prepare funding support applications for novel areas of work.
Main duties:
1) Carry immunogenicity and challenge experiments in chickens to determine the effect of specific mutations in the genome of the fowplox recombinant viral vector.
2) Refine and develop advanced assay systems for host and vector responses.
3) To assist in the day-to-day running of the laboratory
4) To present their data at meetings and in peer reviewed publications.
The job description is only an outline of the tasks, responsibilities and outcomes required of the role. The jobholder will carry out any other duties as may be reasonably required by his/her line manager. The job description and personal specification may be reviewed on an ongoing basis in accordance with the changing needs of the Human Resources Division and the Institute for Animal Health.
All employees shall actively participate in theIAH-wide quality assurance system in conjunction with the Institute Quality Manager. Employees are also expected to safeguard their own health and safety and security by followingIAHpolicies and all employees are responsible for the Health and Safety and security of staff under their management.
