Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research position in high-speed, mixed-signal integrated circuit design. The successful applicant will join the Photonic Systems Group, at the Tyndall National Institute (http://www.tyndall.ie/research/photonics-systems-group/index.html), and will carry out research focused on the design and implementation of digital circuits for high-speed, multilevel (pulse amplitude modulation or M-PAM) transceivers. This work will be conducted in close collaboration with other researchers working in this field in the Photonic Systems Group. In addition, the programme will involve significant interaction with industrial partners based in Ireland.

The position, which is available starting Jan. 2012 for a period of two years, is funded by the Microelectronics Competence Centre Ireland (www.mcci.ie). The main objective of the research is to develop and implement the digital back-end for a high-speed (56Gb/s, 28Gbaud/s) PAM-4 clock and data recovery (CDR) circuit. The CDR is part of a PAM-4 transceiver chip and will be integrated using a deep-submicron CMOS technology. Additionally the researcher will be involved in the design and development of supporting digital circuitry for this transceiver, as well as the subsequent testing of the realized silicon.

The candidate will hold, or being expecting to receive, a PhD in Electronic and Electrical Engineering and will have a strong interest, knowledge and experience (including published research papers and involvement in tape-out of operational chips) in the following areas:
• Strong background in mixed-signal circuit,
• Strong background in all aspects of digital circuit design (VHDL/Verilog programming, design synthesis and functional verification of RTL code and gate-level netlist, place-and-route+optimization, LVS, DRC and xRC),
• Working knowledge of the operation of clock and data recovery circuits,
• Experience with the software tools required for mixed-signal design, verification and mask layout such as Cadence, Modesim, Mentor Calibre LVS/DRC/XRC and Synopsis,
• Familiarity with the instrumentation required for testing will be considered a plus.
