job description

WHERE: The University of Arizona (UA) and The University of Queensland (UQ; Australia)

WHAT: We are currently seeking two postdoctoral researchers to work with Drs. Gene Tyson (UQ) and Virginia Rich (UA), for bioinformatic and statistical analyses of metagenomic, -transcriptomic and -proteomic data from microbial communities in thawing northern permafrost.

BACKGROUND: The candidates are sought to fill key positions in an international collaborative project “Genes, isotopes, and ecosystem biogeochemistry: dissecting methane flux at the leading edge of global change”, with the Universities of Stockholm (Sweden), New Hampshire and Florida State (United States). Our focus ismicrobial mediation of carbon cycling at the discontinuous southern edge of the permafrost, a sentinel ecosystem for global changewith significant positive feedback potential. We are working in collaboration with biogeochemists who are measuring ecosystem- and plot-level fluxes and isotope ratios of carbon gases, and modelers who are distilling the systems-level insights generated by this data for predictive purposes.

DUTIES: The postdoctoral researchers will be involved in cutting-edge comparative multi-“-omics” data analyses, from quality control through biostatistics, including relating molecular data to the project’s rich biogeochemical and ecological metadata, and helping translate molecular metrics into model-suitable parameters. In addition they will work as part of the international collaborative team, developing an interdisciplinary perspective and vocabulary, with strong opportunity to travel to the field site and to partner institutions.

REQUIREMENTS: We are looking for researchers withstrong experience in computational biology / bioinformatics and statistics. Suitable candidates would have PhD in microbial ecology, computational biology, bioinformatics, biostatistics, or a related field. Strong communication skills are essential for this interdisciplinary project.

TERMS&COMPENSATION: The University of Arizona-based postdoc will spend considerable time in Australia working with the Tyson lab, and both postdocs will likely attend at least one international workshop with the full project team. Salary varies based on which country the researcher is primarily located in and on experience. The positions begin as soon thereafter as possible, and continue ~2-3 years. Review of applications begins immediately.

TOAPPLY: Applications must consist of the following:
- Cover Letter. It is an opportunity in < 1 page to introduce yourself and highlight the key reasons you should be considered for the role. Include your contact address, email and telephone number.
- Curriculum Vitae, covering the following areas:
• Educational qualifications and professional affiliations that detail the full title of the qualification, the year awarded and the title of the institution attended;
• Employment history in chronological order, starting with current position and specifying dates of employment, title of each position, name of employer, main duties or accountabilities and achievements; and
• The names and contact details (address, telephone, fax and e-mail) of three referees, including if possible a senior person (preferably your supervisor or the head of your organisational unit) closely associated with your current work.
- Brief research statement. A statement of no more than one page addressing prior research experience.

NOTE: Applications must be filed in 2 places:
1. Emailed with the subject “Abisko permafrost postdoc” toisogenie@gmail.com.
2. Through the appropriate University’s online application system: UA’s CareerTrack system athttps://www.uacareertrack.com, “Search Postings” for Job No. 48132; or UQ’s system athttp://tinyurl.com/43j7bkp.
