Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Bioinformatics/Statistical epigenomics

We are looking for an enthusiastic Postdoctoral Research Assistant to work on Bioinformatics/Statistical epigenomics. Our lab (www.icms.qmul.ac.uk/Profiles/Diabetes/Rakyan%20Vardhman.htm) is interested in phenotypic variability that cannot be explained by genetic or environmental heterogeneity. For example, monozygotic twins are often discordant for complex diseases such as diabetes, and isogenic mice can display a range of phenotypic states. We pursue the hypothesis that some of this phenotypic variability is due to epigenetic modifications such as DNA methylation. We use high-throughput, whole-genome methodologies, i.e. epigenomic approaches, to address the biological role of epigenetic modifications in inter-individual phenotypic variability.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on a variety of epigenomics projects including high-throughput sequencing-based datasets of DNA methylation, chromatin, and RNA. These will be in the context of human studies (e.g. monozygotic twins), human complex diseases (cancer, diabetes), and mouse models of environmentally-induced epigenomic perturbations. The candidate will be expected to devise and implement statistical and analytical approaches in an exciting and collaborative work environment that includes computational biologists, experimentalists and clinicians. This post will also involve close collaborations with Drs Vincent Plagnol (www.ucl.ac.uk/ugi/research/VincentPlagnol) and Thomas Down (www.gurdon.cam.ac.uk/down). Applications from candidates currently involved in the analysis of Genome-Wise Association Studies (GWAS) are welcome and prior experience in epigenetics is not necessary.

The Blizard Institute (www.icms.qmul.ac.uk) is part of Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry (http://www.smd.qmul.ac.uk), Queen Mary University of London. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry was ranked in the top 5 medical and dental schools in England for quality of research.

Essential Skills/Qualifications:
- PhD in a relevant subject (e.g. statistics, statistical genetics, genetic epidemiology, computational biology).
- Experience in the use of statistical packages (e.g. R).
- Good scripting/programming skills in languages such as Java, Python or Perl.
- Experience in Unix/Linux, including using Linux in a clustered environment.
- Previous experience in working with high-throughput/large-scale datasets.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate efficiently.
- Enthusiasm, commitment and attention to detail.
- At least one first author peer-reviewed primary research article in the last two years.

Informal enquiries by email to Dr Rakyan (v.rakyan@qmul.ac.uk) are strongly encouraged.

The post is full time for 3 years. Starting salary will be in the range £30,350 – £39,786 per annum inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, final salary pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.

Application enquiries should be directed to Whitechapel recruitment atwch-recruit@qmul.ac.uk.
